Nigeria Plans Solar System for Northern Parts of the Country to Mitigate Incessant National Grid Failures
As perennial system collapse bedevils national grid the minister of Power Adebayo has revealed that the Federal Government is planning independent solar powered super grid for each of the 19 northern states in Nigeria.
He said so far progress has been made in courting interested contractors and financing entities that would “install 100 megawatts each for each of the 20 northern states, which would be scalable to 50 megawatts at first and then upgraded to 100 megawatts”.
Adelabu made this known after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Monday in Abuja during which the President directed that repair works be sped up to restore power to the northern part of Nigeria.
The north has been thrown into a blackout for days following the vandalism of some transmission lines, raising concerns among stakeholders in the region and beyond.
The power model will have an embedded utility solar scale source whereby “all the 19 states will be insulated and immuned from each other, with a backup of an optional grid in the event the national grid has a problem, there will be an alternative grid through which power can be transmitted” to the Northern parts, he said.
