Nigeria Roll Out Measures to Tackle Vagaries of Climate Change
Vice president of Nigeria Kashim Shettima reporting on his Facebook page Friday announced new measures to mitigate the vagaries of climate change.
The measures are to tackle floods, soil erosion, draughts and desertification.
Inaugurating what he calls the National Flood, Erosion, Drought, and Desertification Management Council (NFEDDMC), in his office in Aso Rock Villa Abuja, Vice President Shettima said the council was crucial in the face of recent flood disasters that have ravaged the city of Maiduguri and threatened other coastal areas of the Benue and Niger rivers.
“The council’s mandate” he reiterated, “is to establish a comprehensive approach to combating the growing challenges of environmental and climate-induced disasters, focusing on collaborative efforts across government agencies and regions”.
He stressed the need for a unified response to natural disasters that have increasingly impacted Nigeria.
He therefore tasked the council to “chart a new course in the management of nature-induced disasters, moving beyond siloed efforts and fostering a collaborative, resource-sharing model for optimal performance”, he added.
