Data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations Nigeria is ranked as the highest in yam production with 61,171 kt followed by Ghana and Ivory Coast, based on a comparison of 44 countries in 2022.
Nigeria, accounted for 69.3 % of yam production in the world.
Total yam production reached 88,257 kt in 2022 in the World according to Faostat. This is 2.11 % more than in the previous year and 39.8 % more than 10 years ago.
According to the data the top 10 producers of yam globally behind Nigeria include Ghana with 10.7m tonnes, Côte dIvoire 7.6m tonnes, Benin Republic 3.2m tonnes, Togo with 985K tonnes
Others are Cameroon 543K tonnes, Central African Rep: 491K tonnes, Chad: 462K tonnes, Colombia: 402K tonnes and Papau New Guinea: 378K tonnes
