Goronyo Dam Overflows its Banks Necessitating Release of Excess Volume of Water Downstream
The Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority, SRBDA has announced that its flagship Goronyo Dam has overstretched it’s capacity and now stands at 943 Million Cubic meters.
This situation it said has therefore necessitated the release of an additional 250 cubic meters of excess water from the dam from its previous threshold weeks ago of 300 cubic meters.
In a statement penultimate week, the technical adviser to the managing director of the SRBDA Malam Abubakar Bagudu, Dallatun Kalgo announced the emergency situation adding that it was aimed as safeguard. .
According to him, the managing director and chief executive Shettima Gwandu Alhaji Abubakar Gari Malam has ordered the immediate release of the excess volume of water to avoid damage to infrastructure and crops downstream.
The managing director says he “regrets farmers and critical stakeholders in the Rima Basin downstream would be impacted the most”, adding that this is “due to significant inflow of water from its major tributaries as a result of breached Kankiya Dam in Katsina State and significant amounts of rainfall recorded recently in the catchment areas”.
He concluded that the urgency to release such volume of water was “necessitated by the need to protect its integrity (Goronyo Dam) and avoid high impact disaster on downstream communities”.
