Rima Valley Downstream Irrigation Farmers Assured of Timely Release of Water
The Management of Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority, SRBDA is set to tackle the low level of water in the downstream sectors of the Middle Rima Valley Irrigation Project that is posing threat to thousands of Rice farms in some parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states.
The managing director of the authority Alhaji Abubakar Malam, Shettiman Gwandu has since directed the immediate release of appropriate water volumes needed to cater for the needs of the rice and other irrigation farmers.
He also ordered the immediate implementation of modalities for a sustainable solution including a well defined action plan towards ensuring availability of water during the pre-inflow period.
According to Amiru Adamu, head of
Strategic Communications Unit of the authority, this followed the managing director’s earlier visit, in company of top management staff to some rice fields in the Middle Rima Valley Irrigation Project farms at Argungu and Birnin Kebbi to ascertain the magnitude of the problem with a view to proffering sustainable solutions, including bridging communication gap in order to carry all stakeholders along in all programs and services that have direct bearings on their farming activities.
Assistant Program Manager and Head of Goronyo Dam Management, Engr Abdullahi Jafar had earlier assured that there were no cause for alarm as the Goronyo Dam Reservoir now contains adequate water volumes that can navigate the remaining days of the 2025 pre- inflow period.
The managing director was accompanied by the director administration Hassan Bawa, project manager Middle Rima Valley Irrigation Project Goronyo, the head of Goronyo Dam Management Abdullahi Jafar, head of procurement Yahaya Kaoje, head of Climate Change Unit Abubakar Sagir and Hajiya Mariyatu Muhammad, the project manager Zauro Polder among others.
