NAFDAC Worries Over Counterfeit Foods, Drinks and Drugs: Warns Nigerians of Health Hazards
During a press briefing in Abuja, NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye emphasized the urgency of this warning, urging consumers to avoid purchasing medications from roadside vendors, as these establishments often have inadequate storage facilities and may offer fraudulent products.
She expressed concern over the rising issue of counterfeit and adulterated drinks, food, and medications in Nigeria, which pose significant health risks to the population.
NAFDAC, she says advises the general public not to buy medicines from corner stores or informal street vendors. It is essential to visit a licensed pharmacy when seeking medication, she stated.
While acknowledging the financial strain many Nigerians are facing, she warned that opting for cheaper options could result in severe health consequences, including illness or even death. “Drinks are particularly susceptible to counterfeiting during festive periods, so we must exercise extreme caution,” she added.
Prof. Adeyeye encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to check for NAFDAC registration numbers and expiry dates on products before making purchases.
