Nigeria’s Borno State Embarks on Rail System for Capital City, Maiduguri

Work Begins on Northern Nigeria’s 1st Rail Network

The first phase of the project will include 12 designated terminals across Maiduguri, linking markets, schools, public spaces, and economically strategic hubs.

Once completed, the project aims to revolutionize transportation in Maiduguri by providing a cost-effective, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative while complementing other infrastructure projects such as the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East, West, and South ring road expansions.

The network is also designed to ease passenger and goods movement, boost economic activities, and expand economic corridors across the state.

In Zulum’s administration has also introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates for Maiduguri residents to alleviate the impacts of transportation and living costs following the removal of fuel subsidies.

This innovative rail project is part of Zulum’s broader commitment to restoring peace, fostering economic growth, and rebuilding infrastructure across Borno State after over a decade of devastation caused by the Boko Haram insurgency and the harsh economic conditions of the people following the removal subsidy on petroleum products.

It is part of Zulum’s broader commitment to restoring peace, fostering economic growth, and rebuilding infrastructure across Borno State.

The Borno State Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, in company of the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), after inspection of the sites revealed that feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments and community consultations are ongoing to ensure the project’s success.
