30 Years Later, Maiduguri Suffers Yet Another Devastating Flood

2024 Maiduguri Floods Greater, More Damaging, as 40% of the City is Washed Away

It appears this year’s incident is far more bigger in scale and destruction. This of course is as a result that River Ngada originating from Southern Borno and River Yedsaram coming through Adamawa state that meet exactly in Maiduguri have breached their banks

According to Mohammed Alkali, writing on his Facebook page “these two rivers cut through almost  40% of the city to eventually merge in Gwange District thereby making Maiduguri a confluence city of sort”, with devastating effect on houses and personal belongings submerged in the flood waters.

He said there is also Alau Dam which supplies portable water to the city. The Dam is located opposite University of Maiduguri and sources its water mainly from the River Yedsaram

For the above reasons, Alkali added, “any year in which the rains come plentifully, waters overflow from the three basins thereby hitting many parts of the city with their attendant consequences”.

The last major flood affecting Maiduguri came in 1994, attributed mainly to climate issues, town planning control failures and indiscriminate buildings on the  waterways. Yesterday’s floods may as well be said to be worse than that of 30 years ago, he concluded.

Meanwhile, Abdulyassar Abdulhamid reporting for Daily Trust said the Borno Museum Park management has raised alarm over escape of deadly animals into residential communities.

The General manager Borno State Museum Park, Ali Abatcha, in a statement on Tuesday said the flood disaster caused damage to properties and led to the deaths of over 80% of its animals.

He announce that some deadly animals including crocodiles and snakes have been washed away and urged the public to be aware and take all the necessary precautions measures to avoid these animals.
