92 Cities and Towns in 17 States of Nigeria May be Flooded
National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment Abuja has penciled 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory as likely to suffer floodings.
This is as result of heavy rainfall, especially ones that were witnessed across these states from Sunday 25 culminating today August 29, 2024 or beyond.
The states and areas that would be most affected are Mubi and Shelleng in Adamawa. Azare, Jama’are, Itas and Misau in Bauchi State and Bama, Biu, Briyel, Maiduguri, Ngala, Mallam Fatori, Damasak, Kukawa and Dikwa in Borno State and Mabushi, Kwali , Kurundu, Kubwa, Bwari in the FCT.
Others are Bajoga and Nafada in Gombe State, Hadejia, Miga, Dutse, Gumel, Ringim and Gwaram in Jigawa State as well as Buruku, Jaji, Zaria, Kachia, Kaduna and Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State.
The prediction also indicated that in Kano State, towns and environs such as Wudil, Gezawa, Kunchi, Kano, Karaye, Gwarzo, Bebeji and Tudun Wada are unlikely to be spared.
The neighboring state of Katsina would have Bakori, Bindawa, Funtua, Jibia , Kaita, Katsina and Daura to also suffer same fate as announced by FEWS in its press statement.
Already as in the case of Jigawa, Kebbi State was recently visited by the minister of finance Wale Edu to see what the federal government needed to do to alleviate the sufferings of the people of the two states that had been displaced by recent flooding of homes and markets.
The places already affected beside Birnin Kebbi, the state capital and Argungu, include Yelwa, Shanga, Yauri, Bunza, Jega, Kamba, Kangiwa, Ribah and Kalgo.
In north central Nigeria, Niger, Kwara and Nasarawa states would have Wushishi, New- Bussa, Rijau, Kontagora, Mashegu, Sarkin-Pawa, Lapai, Minna, Suleija, Kosubosu, Kaiama, Ado, Lafia, Mararaba and Aso respectively.
Yobe State is not spared as Jakusko, Dapchi , Damaturu, Geidam, Potiskum, Kanamma, Gashua, Machina and Gasma are expected to be flooded as well.
The least states and towns to suffer flush floods are in Oyo State: Iwere-ile, Kishi. Sokoto State: Gada, Goronyo and Isa. Taraba State : Bolleri and Ibi, and Talata Mafara, expectedly, the home of Bakolori Dam in Zamfara State.
FEWS therefore advised relevant stakeholders to prepare for the imminent misfortunes that would accompany the torrential rains in their states.
